The Mayor’s Cup football championship is closing in on its semifinal round. The battle for the four semifinal slots start Sunday with the first two quarterfinal matches at the Georgetown Football Club ground, Bourda.
Sunday’s quarters will see powerhouse Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United looking to impose their will on Santos in the curtain raiser at 6:00pm. Fresh off their 8-0 bombardment of BV Alpha will hope for a similar dominant performance against their city rivals as they not only look for the $1M first prize and another title to their collection, but moreso this tournament aids their preparation for the CFU Club Championship second round encounter and will serve as a confidence booster.
The second contest promises to be a scorcher between Pele and Riddim Squad in the nightcap at 8:00pm. Riddim Squad are known to upset big name teams and Pele would be cognisant of that fact and will hope to turn back their challenge, but the East Bank side have other plans.
The road to the semis continues Wednesday at the same venue with Fruta Conquerors facing GDF, while BK Western Tigers tackle Camptown. The respective winners collide in the semis set for Sunday April 3 at the GFC.
Several sponsors have combined with the Mayor’s Cup Committee to ensure the tournament is a success. Among them are Banks DIH, Macorp, Digicel, General Equipment Guyana Limited, Busta, National Pride, Dr Colin Watson, Gold Target Export, Giftland Office Max, AH&L Kissoon, John Fernandes Limited, Bakewell, Keishar’s, Winston Rambarran, Nazar Mohamed, Humphrey Bakery, Body Max Gym, Rusal, Muneshwar’s, Ricks and Sari, BK International, Guyana Lottery Company, GIDI and Commissioner of Police Henry Greene.
