Dear Editor,
I write to commend columnist Freddie Kissoon on one of the more objective political analysis he has written in a very long time: “Carl Greenidge and Nietzsche’s Übermensch” (Kaieteur News, March 25).
Undoubtedly, this man has real talent and the ability to write some very interesting columns when his focus is not targeting the ‘demon’ Jagdeo and members of the PPP/C. Just shows he can be objective when he wants to be.
Except for a few serious students of politics, I bet not many Guyanese know who the controversial 19th century German philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was, nor do they know anything about his concept of Übermensch (overman). But this is vintage Freddie; at least the rest of the article was written in words the average reader can understand.
I concur with Freddie’s analysis on Carl Greenidge’s performance in his quest to be the PNCR presidential candidate. It is left to be seen whether David Granger and Robert Corbin will honour the choice of so many within the Party, and offer Greenidge the Prime Minister’s candidacy. Not that this will affect the outcome of the election which looks like another PPP/C victory, but it may help the PNCR secure more seats as a united party, thus becoming a more effective opposition in Parliament.
Guyana desperately needs a system of checks and balances to guard against corruption and mis-use of public funds. But we also need an effective opposition who will not only stop wasteful spending – keeping the government in check, but will give critical support to government policies that are beneficial to Guyana and the Guyanese people.
This may be a novel idea to local politicians, but we have to recognise that no individual or political party has all the answers, and it takes real courage for politicians to cross the floor in support of another’s objective. Guyanese politicians need to be more responsibly and work together for the good of our people, leaving the crab-dance in the past where it belongs. Only then can we ever hope to achieve political maturity and stability.
