Dear Editor,
While I agree with the position Ms. Lurlene Nestor has taken, I can’t help but wonder if the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) is aware of the implications of President Jagdeo’s statements.
Indeed, this body seems impotent to deal with matters of human rights generally and racial matters in particular. I wonder if they know the difference.
Encouraging Guyanese of African descent in Buxton to “forget the past and move forward with the development of their community” seems an entirely appropriate and responsible statement for the President or any other politician to make. Contrast that with his comments to his constituents – “remind your younger comrades of the history of the PNC when they were in Government”.
Jagdeo’s divergent views to these communities show the hypocrisy of him and his government – fanning the flames of racial tension quietly while seeking to mislead Guyanese otherwise. This is dangerous.
I hope the youth Jagdeo would like to influence have more brains and maturity than him!
My prayer is that they see him for who he really is – a man who would risk exacerbating the tensions that are already there – just below the surface – for political gain in the upcoming elections.
