Ansa McAl, New GPC & Johnny Singh contribute to Team Guyana
The response from the business community to an appeal of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) has been given the thumbs up by GAPF Boss, Peter Green.
The Federation encountered financial difficulties in fielding a full 8-member team to the 5th IPF/NAPF Caribbean Powerlifting Championships which will start today in Georgetown, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.
With the munificence of Ansa McAl Trading and the New Guyana Pharmaceutical Corporation, the GAPF was able to add a 5th athlete to the Guyana team in junior lifter, Kenneth Melville. Melville, Randolph Morgan and Green left Guyana yesterday for the Cayman Islands.
Melville who will be aiming for excellence in the 105.0kg/110.0kg division is the current National Novice and Intermediate Junior champion and also the CAC and North American Junior (2010) champion.
Ansa McAl’s Public Relations Officer Ms. Darshanie Yussuf handed over her company’s contribution while New GPC’s Marketing Manager Trevor Basso did the honors for his company to Melville.
Businessman Johnny Singh, who is also an agent of GT&T’s Cellink, made a contribution to the GAPF also to assist the team.
Morgan, who will be competing in the 82.5kg/83.0kg class and two-time Men’s Open Caribbean Best lifter Overall Champion – 2009/2010 will be aiming to make it three in a row when he takes centre stage today along with Guyana’s lone female on the team, Dawn Barker who will also be aiming for gold in the 90.0kg/84.0+kg category. Barker also holds the proud record of being the first and only female Guyanese to squat over 400 lbs.
The other athletes on the team, ‘Big’ John Edwards, Karel Mars, Melville and Colin ‘Mr. Clean’ Chesney will all compete tomorrow.
Despite being 3-athletes short, Green and Edwards have both expressed confidence that Guyana will still be a force to reckon with when it comes to defending the team title they won last year when the championships were hosted here for the first time.
Green commented: “We now have a fighting chance of retaining team honours with our five against their eight member teams bearing in mind we have quality to their quantity.”
Team Guyana will be going for the Team Title, Best lifter Male Open, Best Lifter Female Open, Best Lifter Male Masters and Best Lifter Male Junior.
