– Event set for Saturday at Cliff Anderson Sports Hall
Memories of Kevin Lawrence, the deceased former Ravens Basketball Club player, were rife at a formal launch of the Kevin Lawrence Memorial (KLM) Basketball Championships yesterday at the Windjammers International Hotel in Kitty.
Family and players turned up for the launching of the event, which was said to be the first of lots of others to follow, will be held on Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Ravens’ national point guard and now coach, Darcel Harris said the event is their way of paying homage to one of their best players, who passed last year following an accident.
A showdown between a Georgetown All-Star and Ravens senior team will be the highlight of the night that will also see the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) Elite Squad facing off with Ravens’ junior players in a preceding game at the marquee indoor venue.
The players will be competing for cash incentives and trophies. Harris is anticipating a night of competitive and quality basketball. “Both games will be good, it will see some of Guyana’s most promising talents in the YBG team along with Ravens and Georgetown,” Harris said.
Meanwhile Kevin’s brother, Richard, sorrowfully indicated that it is a bittersweet return for him, given that the last time he was here a year ago, was to lay his brother to rest.
“While this is a sad day for me, I’m also happy because I’m glad to see that people are trying to keep my brother alive and are behind it 100 percent. I’m sure he would have liked it and wanted the same for anyone else. So I’m glad that his friends, the Ravens Basketball Club is doing this in his honour” Richard said.
The older Lawrence described his brother as someone who dedicated a great part of his life to basketball, adding “he let my father down because he was a fine cricketer and my father always wanted him to play cricket, but Kevin love the game of basketball and that was the sport he chose to play and did great in and we were all proud of him. He was a fine gentleman and great sportsman as well.”
Kevin played small forward for Ravens and was considered one of the best shooters in the game locally. His marksman like shooting from beyond the arc made him a threat to any team. He was a problem for any defence interested in marking him.
On Saturday, the Ravens line-up will feature Ryan ‘Kobrone’ Gullen, Ryan Stephaney, Stephan ‘Penny’ Henry, Rodwell ‘Kobe’ Fortune, Rudy James, Jermaine Slater, Marlon Rodrigues, Esuf Edghill, Travis ‘Cook-up’ Foster, Syria’h Clarke and Dwayne ‘Brown-Sugar’ Roberts.
Their opposition will feature the likes of Courts Pacesetters trio, Royston Siland, Stephon Gillis and Travis Burnett, Bounty Colts’ ‘garbage-player’, Niko Fraser, Akeem ‘The Dream’ Kanhai, Nets’ Mortimer Williams and Pelham Doris along with Pepsi Sonics’ Richard Braithwaite, Kurt Elias and Darren Thomas on the ‘GT’ All-Star Team.
“It will be good for everyone to come out and see because we’re promising quality basketball on display” Harris stated. Sunday will mark exactly one year since Lawrence passed as a patient of High Dependency Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Dyna’s Embroidery, Paul Discount Shoes Inc in Brooklyn New York, Ross Service Station, Cirkel Distributors, Windjammers International Hotel, Robin Hunte, Stars Party Rental, Burch Smith, and A. Alphonso and Sons are among the sponsors of the event.
