Leron Griffith, 23, a taxi driver yesterday appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry to answer to the charge of robbery under arm. The defendant who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty.
It is alleged that on March 19, in Georgetown, the accused in the company of two others, while being armed with a gun, robbed Clearance and Samantha Fraser of $976,000 worth in gold jewelry, cash and other articles.
The court was further told that on the day of the incident, the plaintiffs were in a car approaching their gate when the accused came up and pointed a gun to their heads demanding that they must hand over everything.
The plaintiffs became afraid and complied.
The defendant and his associates then made good their escape in a waiting car. The terrified victims managed to observe the getaway car’s number. That information was handed over to the police when the matter was reported.
The police then launched an investigation and found the car parked in the yard of the accused.
Lawmen recovered a portion of the cash which was taken during the robbery.
The accused gave his address to the court as lot 3 Ketley Street, Charlestown.
Magistrate Beharry refused bail to the accused. The matter was made returnable for April 11.
