Housewife/vendor Denise Fortune, of New Amsterdam, Berbice, was yesterday remanded for allegedly having in her possession 415 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
She made an appearance before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Fortune pleaded not guilty. She was unrepresented.
It is alleged that on March 19, at Waterfront, Port Kaituma, North West District, the police were carrying out routine checks in the said area when ranks observed the accused acting in a suspicious manner. Her handbag was searched and lawmen unearthed a substance suspected to be marijuana.
Fortune was arrested and taken to the police station where the substance was weighed and tested in her presence. After it was discovered to be 415 grams of marijuana, the police told her of the offence and instituted the charge.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Stephen Telford, requested that bail be refused and the matter be transferred to the Matthews Range Magistrate’s Court for May 3. Magistrate Beharry granted this request.
And Mark Barry made his first court appearance before the said Magistrate to answer to the charge of break and enter. He was not required to plea. Barry was also unrepresented.
The court was told that on March 6, at 111 Miles, Mahdia, the accused broke into the home of Hamilton Almuia and made good his escape with 36 and an half ounces of raw gold worth $12 million and $1.4 million in local currency. It was further alleged that on the day of the incident, the plaintiff secured his home and went out. Upon his return he discovered that one of the windows of his house was open. Upon further checks, the plaintiff found a vault that contained the articles missing. Hence, the matter was reported to the police and based on information, lawmen apprehended the accused. Barry was on his way to show ranks where he hid the articles when he escaped. The police managed to rearrest him.
The court was also told that the accused was employed by the plaintiff as a handyman.
According to information provided to the court, the accused admitted to breaking into the house and pilfering the articles mentioned in the charge. Barry’s address was given to the court as Ann’s Grove, Two Friends, East Coast Demerara.
Bail was refused by the magistrate. The matter will be called again on April 20 at Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
