The overseer of the Caledonia/Good Success Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), Raghunandan Singh, is refuting allegations by some residents. The allegations were contained in an article published under the caption “Ambrise Street in dire need of works”.
The article appeared in the edition of Kaieteur News last Saturday.
According to Singh, before residents of East Friendship, East Bank Demerara received paved roads in 2009, they used two entrances that were alleyways. However, in 2009 the Ministry of Works visited the site to establish where roads should be placed.
He said the Ministry of Works then decided to place the road through “Ellidry dam” which runs east to west and turns to the southern side where all the residents have access to the paved road. “Ms. Watts and Ms Collins who spoke to the newspaper are among the beneficiaries.”
Singh said that the NDC had meetings with residents. “Ms. Watts was promised that the council will build a small access bridge linking Ambrise Street to the public road…There are no 18 households using that entrance; it’s a lie! Council promised to build a small bridge. Ms. Watts is demanding a heavy duty bridge which council cannot afford.”
Singh explained that the NDC promised to build a four-foot wide foot path. However, some people are demanding a main access road. “This is illogical since the funding for the council comes from rates and taxes to develop and maintain the area.”
There was no spiteful action on his behalf, Singh said. He only implements the policy decisions that are made by the 18-member council of the NDC. He also noted the council does not deny any services to residents and this can be verified by persons in the area.
Singh further said that council lobbied for 23 roads to be built. “Thirteen have been completed to date.”
