Skipper Assad Fudadin hit a responsible 44 but Guyana produced another dodgy batting display to lose to the Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) by eight runs at the 3Ws Oval on the final day of their sixth round Regional four-day cricket contest yesterday.
Set 200 to win, Guyana slumped to 191 all out four balls after Tea as the Guyanese, who remain on 16 points, lost their third consecutive match to CCC in Barbados.
Scores: CCC 251 & 155, Guyana 207 & 191.
Guyana enter their final round match against Trinidad and Tobago at Albion from Friday at the bottom of the points standing and are no longer in the race for the title.
Guyana resumed the day on 30-1 in a good position for their first ever win against CCC but 22-year-old Bajan pacer Carlos Brathwaite, who snatched four of the last five wickets to fall including the last two in two balls after Tea, followed up his first innings 4-37 with 5-24 to claim his second five-wicket haul at this level and the Man-of-the-Match award.
Off-spinner Ryan Austin took 3-75 after claiming 4-76 in the first innings for CCC who are now only behind England Lions in the points standing.
The left-handed Fudadin hit three fours and two sixes in his 44 from 120 balls and 161 minutes.
But once he was given leg before to Brathwaite although he clearly edged the ball, Guyana were 163-6 and never recovered despite a resolute 111-minute and 78-ball 32 from Vishaul Singh who was leg before to Austin on the stroke of Tea to leave Guyana on 190-8.
Fudadin and Derwin Christian (32) put together 52 for the fifth wicket after Guyana had slipped to 69-4 when Leon Johnson edged pacer Carlos Braithwaite for a fighting 23.
Fudadin, who fell six short of his second fifty of the season, found a useful partner in Singh to add 41 for the sixth wicket after Christian was leg before to left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh at 122-5.
The Guyanese finished last in the competition last year and the year before and their batting results has regressed with them being bowled out in their last home game by England Lions for their lowest total (78) since the 41 they made against Jamaica in 1986. Mark Harper, in his first assignment as Coach after taking over from Ravindra Seeram, refused to speak to the Media after Guyana’s embarrassing defeat yesterday.
Earlier, Johnson began with a boundary in the day’s first over off Kevin McLean before Ramdeen, who added three to his overnight 13, lofted McLean to extra cover as CCC struck 13 minutes into the day’s play.
Test player Narsingh Deonarine joined fellow left-hander Johnson in glorious sunshine and got off the mark with a pugnacious pull for four off Austin who produced prodigious bounce and turn. Austin soon had Deonarine (8) caught at gully; pushing forward, to leave the South Americans on 58-3.
A handful of spectators saw Fudadin clip Austin to the mid-wicket boundary but Johnson soon edged Braithwaite to second slip as Guyana slipped to 69-4. Johnson’s 23 lasted 72 balls, 99 minutes and included two fours.
Like Johnson, Fudadin looked determined to make a meaningful contribution and stroked Austin for four and followed it up with a six in the same over as the off-spinner showed signs of tiring after his non-stop spell for all but 15 minutes of the first session.
Christian pulled leg-spinner Nkruma Bonner for a boundary and dumped left arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh for six just before Lunch.
By the interval, the fifth wicket partnership had progressed to 52 with Guyana on 121-4, still 79 away from victory with Christian on 32 and Fudadin on 27.
Christian was leg before to a ball which kept low from Kantasingh at 122-5 after hitting three fours and a six in his 77-ball and 85-minute innings.
Singh came off the mark with a boundary off Kantasingh and flicked the left-arm spinner for another four in his next over as be began his innings in positive fashion, while Fudadin lofted Austin on top of the pavilion over long-off and spanked him for four through cover.
When Singh smacked Kantasingh for four the victory target was reduced to less than 50 runs.
Fudadin survived a confident caught behind appeal off Braithwaite at 161-5 but two runs later he was shockingly sent packing by umpire Gregory Brathwaite to leave Guyana on 163-6 as Carlos Brathwaite broke the partnership just when it was beginning to look ominous for the students.
Zaheer Mohamed, picked ahead of batsman Steven Jacobs, who can also bowl off-spin, was ‘caught behind’ for a duck without addition to the score as Braithwaite, who had 7-90 on his debut against Trinidad and Tobago this season, struck again.
Singh, one of only three batsmen in the side with half-centuries this season, was joined by Veerasammy Permaul, who swung Kantasingh for four just before Tea.
Austin put the game on a knife’s edge when he trapped Singh leg before on the stroke of Tea at 190-8 with Guyana needing 10 to win.
In the first over after the break Brathwaite produced consecutive full deliveries to trap Brendon Bess and Ronsford Beaton leg before for ducks as the game ended seven minutes after Tea with Permaul unbeaten on 13.
