The Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) “Man Up! Be a Champion for Change” Under 23 football tournament is set to kick off today with a double header, at Mackenzie Sports Club ground, starting from 15:00 hrs.
Preceding the start of competition will be a March Past of all the participating teams and that will be followed by Bakewell Topp XX against Netrockers, while in the second game Regal United do battle with Blue Berry Hill United.
The teams participating in the tournament are; Milerock, Bakewell Topp XX, Silver Shatta, Eagles United, Amelia’s Ward United, Blue Berry Hill United, Regal United, Winners Connections, and Netrockers and the winners will receive $100,000, while second and third placed finishers cart off $50,000 and $20,000 respectively, along with trophies.
Meanwhile, following the successful training and selection of coaches, referees and other Officials, to work as facilitators on “Gender, Youth and Violence training”, the Ministry of Human Services through the region #10 Domestic Violence Committee in partnership with UNIFEM and the UDFA, held the official launch of the tournament last Tuesday in Linden Enterprise Network (LEN) Conference Room and in attendance were tournament officials, sponsors, coaches and players.
Abbas Mancy Coordinator of the Domestic Violence Policy Unit, within the Ministry of Human Services began by giving an overview of the programme which he explained is part of the Ministry’s approach to tackle domestic violence (DV) by engaging men and boys, who he said are most often the perpetrators.
Mancy stated that the six (6) trained facilitators will be conducting an hour and a half session with the ten participating teams the day after they would have played their matches and each club would be assigned two Facilitators who will be tasked with educating players on gender roles, gender base violence, fatherhood, anger and conflict management and resolution techniques.
This will be done over a five-week period after which an evaluation will be done using the Gender-Equitable Men Scale (GEM Scale) that measures perceptions to assess change in attitude.
Sharma Solomon, Vice Chairman of the Region #10 Domestic Violence committee, expressed thanks to all the stakeholders who were working to make this programme a success, especially the Ministry. He said that although the committee is still working to properly assert itself, the tournament can be viewed as a significant start at implementing the committee’s six (6) programme “action plan”, which was put together by several stakeholders through out the region last September.
Solomon, who is also the Vice President of the UDFA said that part of the UDFA’s responsibility was to help in the character building of the Association’s footballers on and off the field, and to contribute to the social development of the Upper Demerara community.
In presenting the format of the tournament, Solomon mentioned that the tournament is designed to have clubs play a two-group round-robin KO, where the top two (2) clubs on points in their respective groups advance to the semi finals.
However, the clubs would also have to attend one lecture session per week for five weeks where they could also earn points for attendance.
