Used by the Minister Robinson Benn and hundreds of other commuters to access their homes and work places, Meadowbrook Drive is a road where disaster lurks.
The road is located just off the Mandela Avenue, Georgetown. As it is, there have been grave concerns by residences and minibus operators about the narrowness of the said thoroughfare. Amanda Peters, a residence who has been living in the area for the past ten years said that she do not believe that Meadowbrook Drive should be open to two way traffic.
According to Peters, there is limited road space when two vehicles and a pedestrian traverse at the same. Hence there should be another route where either outgoing or incoming traffic to the community can be diverted.
“If yall come and see what does really go on, when two bus driving and a person is walking at de same time, dem bus does deh driving close, close to dem people. We frighten to even send our kids on de road”.
Peters suggested that even if the diversion is not possible, a walkway should be constructed at one end of Meadowbrook Drive.
This Newspaper understands that before Meadowbrook Drive went under repair, Guyhoc buses used to exit from the area in proximity to the East La Penitence Police Station.
But that has changed, and this is putting pedestrians in danger.
Two minors have escaped serious injury on the said thoroughfare.
During the interview with villagers, it was pointed out that several streets in the community are nothing less then pot holes.
It was said that some of them were recently repaired but unfortunately they are back to “square one”.
“When dem contractors were here all dem do was to full up de holes with asphalt and left. By de time the rain come is back to square one”.
One angry vehicle owner explained that it is costly for him to be doing repairs on his car every month due to the state of the streets. He avowed that the way Meadowbrook’s populace has been treated is like we are the ‘forgotten community’. “All de Government did for us is to built a fine, fine drive out there and forget persons homes are situated in all the different streets in this village. Is victimized we have been victimized”.
For the duration of Kaieteur News visit, residents made reference to the residential housing scheme aback of the said community. “Even de blind can see that in the residential scheme has good road and when you come to de front of Meadowbrook it is worst than trails in the interior. We paying tax too”.
At the end of this newspaper’s visit, villagers called with desperation on government officials to hear their cries.
