As Guyana’s woeful batting continue

Rajendra Chandrika fell one short of his second First –Class fifty as Guyana’s woeful top order batting continued on the second day of their Regional four-day cricket game against Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) at the 3Ws Oval here yesterday.
Twenty-nine year-old Test off-spinner Ryan Austin, whose best performance of 7-42 was against Guyana, grabbed 4-76 and got support from 22-year-old pacer Carlos Braithwaite (4-37) as Guyana, replying to CCC’s 251, were dismissed for 207.
This was despite an entertaining 63-run eight-wicket stand between Zaheer Mohamed (34) and Derwin Christian.
The inept shot selection and technical flaws of the batsmen continues to raise serious questions about their mental fortitude and the ability of Coach Mark Harper to arrest the decline after taking over from Ravindra Seeram, who also struggled during his tenure.
With a lead of 44, CCC were 40-3 in their second innings after for the second time in the match they lost Omar Phillips off the first ball of their innings to Brendon Bess.
Vincentian Rommel Currency and Jamaican Shacaya Thomas took the attack to the Guyana bowlers before left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul trapped Thomas (15) leg before at 38-2.
Night watchman Kavesh Kantasingh was bowled by Permaul for a duck at 38-3 while first innings top-scorer Kyle Corbin (0) and Currency (21) ensured the hosts ended the day with an overall lead of 84. Corbin was batting with a hairline fracture to his left hand.
Earlier, Guyana resumed in sunny conditions on 11-1 and while night watchman Permaul survived some testing fast bowling from Kevin Mclean and Braithwaite, Chandrika upper-cut McLean for six and Permaul cut him ‘bullet-like’ to the point boundary in the seventh over of the day.
On a track with some pace and bounce, Permaul grew in confidence as his innings progressed and he was not afraid to get behind the short balls.
Watched by another small crowd, Permaul and Chandrika carried the score to 41 before Permaul (20) who batted for 44 minutes yesterday and struck two boundaries, missed an ambitious slog-sweep to the first ball from Austin and was bowled.
Leon Johnson joined Chandrika and carried the score to 70 before, for the ‘umpteenth’ time in his career Johnson orchestrated his own demise with his overused sweep shot, this time from outside off-stump.
After hitting two fours and a six in his 20, the left-hander edged Austin and was wonderfully caught by a leaping Reifer at slip, 25 minutes before Lunch.
Narsingh Deonarine, the teams most experienced and accomplished batsman, joined Chandrika to take Guyana to 94-3 by Lunch with Chandrika four away from his second fifty at this level. Deonarine was on three and Guyana 158 away from first innings points.
Chandrika, who made 47 in the opening game in Jamaica, again failed to reach his half-century when he edged Braithwaite to slip to leave Guyana on 98-4 in the second over after Lunch. His 49 lasted 108 balls, 145 minutes and was decorated with five fours and a six.
Skipper Assad Fudadin, one of just three batsmen with fifties this season retuned to his customary middle order position after he was asked to open in the last two matches when Shemroy Barrington was surprisingly dropped.
The 27-year-old Deonarine, with two fifties from eight Tests and seven centuries from 84 First-Class matches, inexplicably played no shot to Braithwaite and had his off stump knocked back as he fell for nine as the Guyanese slipped to 108-5.
It was soon 117-6 when Vishaul Singh was leg before to Austin for a duck as Guyana’s poor batting continued.
Christian, publically chastised at the GCA elections by Coach Harper for his impetuous shot selection this season, got going with a cut for four off Austin and displayed a level head throughout his innings.
West Indies ‘A’ team left-hander Fudadin, in his 64th innings at this level, pulled Mclean for four but like Deonarine, amazingly played no shot and was bowled by Austin for 17 as Guyana slumped to 130-7. By Tea Guyana were 140-7 with Christian on 13, Zaheer Mohamed on four.
The pair batted positively after the break with Mohamed smashing Austin for six over mid-wicket and Christian hammering him for a boundary. The 25-year-old Mohamed, with one half-century from 13 matches at this level, clobbered leg-spinner Nkruma Bonner for a huge six over extra cover to post the ‘fifty’ partnership from 81 balls.
The pugnacious Christian then swung a tired looking Austin for four as he cleverly mixed ‘tight’ defence with calculated aggression while Mohamed, picked more for his spin bowling, cut McLean for four as the partnership prospered in conditions that had become overcast.
However, Braithwaite had Mohamed, who hit four fours and two sixes in his 47 balls innings, caught behind at 193-8 and Christian was soon LBW to Bonner at 201-9. His 41 lasted 82 balls, 107 minutes and included six fours.
The innings ended when Ronsford Beaton (1) fended a catch to short-leg off Braithwaite who had 7-90 against T&T on his debut this year.
They have bowled well this season but with both of their previous matches against CCC in Barbados ending in defeats, the South Americans, whose batting does not inspire much confidence, face an uphill task going into the penultimate day today.
