The two amateur boxers set to participate in the World Junior and Youth Boxing Championship and Camp in Turkey, Carol Ann Bess and Alika London, are heightening preparations at the Forgotten Youth Foundation gym in Albouystown.
They are being taken through their paces by National Coach Wensel Thomas along with assistance from two outstanding coaches in Sebert Blake and Terrence Poole.
Just last week, President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle along with Vice President Eustace Cuffy and Treasurer Dexter Patterson, visited the two young ladies and met them along with their parents in the presence of the coaches. Ninvalle and team stressed the importance of discipline to the pair and enlisted the help of their parents in ensuring they remained disciplined even at home and noted that GABA wanted their help to maximize their performance overseas.
The GABA officials found out ways they could assist the two fighters in providing necessary personal items needed during their preparation, including nutritional supplements, and was given a list which they are in the process of acquiring to hand over to the ladies this week.
London, who is the daughter of former heavyweight world champ Pamela London, and Bess, are due to leave Guyana on April 9 for Curacao where they will board another flight to Turkey. Their engagement in Turkey starts on April 11 with a one week training camp after which they will compete in the championship there.
The two will use action in this month’s Friday night fights as final competitive preparation for their overseas engagement.
Ninvalle commented that the pair looked good going through their paces and the coaches gave a good report of their commitment to training. He expects they will do themselves and country proud.
Last year Guyana was represented in a similar way at the World Women’s championship, which was held in Barbados, by Ansilla Norville and Vanessa Robinson, who both participated in the training camp and the competition.
