Guyana to field a 5-member team to Caribbean C/ships
Beverage Giants Banks DIH, a committed supporter of sports and its development at every level, has once a again proven that undying commitment by answering the call of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) in its quest to be represented at the 5th IPF/NAPF Caribbean Powerlifting Championships set for Georgetown, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands from Wednesday March 23 to Saturday 26.
Despite the fact that the local lifters have been out-powering their rivals since their return to Caribbean and International competition a few years ago, the GAPF has been finding it an enormous challenge raising funds to send teams overseas.
Their {locals} potential to dominate was evident at the 4th IPF/NAPF Caribbean Powerlifting Championships held at the Princess Hotel last year when Guyana won the team title but will not be able to defend same, this time around.
Banks DIH and Buddies Gym have heard the pleas of the federation and have made contributions to the GAPF.
Their donations have ensured that Woman’s Open Champion – Dawn Barker; National Men’s Open Champion (105kg – 110kg) and Overall Best lifter 2010 – Karel Mars and National Open Champion (120.0kg – 125.0kg) and the first and only Guyanese to ever squat over 800lbs Colin Chesney, attend. Men’s Masters M1 Champion – ‘Big’ John Edwards who will also travel with the team will also perform duties as Manager and Coach. The GAPF has disclosed that a fifth lifter will be added to the team but they are to finalize who that lifter would be. Initially, the GAPF had earmarked an 8-member team which was subsequently slashed to 6-members and now finally down to 5-members.
This means that Guyana would not be able to defend their team title which requires countries to have at least 8-lifetrs in order to be eligible.
The disclosure of the 5th athlete would be made sometime tomorrow, the team is expected to leave Guyana on Wednesday for the Cayman Islands with competition set for Friday and Saturday at Kings Sports Center, Ramadan Grand Cayman Resort. The new IPF weight classes will be used for this competition.
