– worker shot in foot
Gunmen dressed as labourers in the employ of BEV Enterprise at Houston Estate, Georgetown robbed the company of some $4.1 million yesterday afternoon.
Shortly after 14:30 hours, the company brought in the money to pay the temporary labourers. They are the people who are recruited to clean vessels brought into the dry docks.
One view is that some among these notified the gunmen that money would be coming in. With more than 100 men milling about the compound the gunmen had no difficulty entering undetected.
According to reports they mingled with the labourers and pounced soon after the money arrived on the location.
Accountant Michael Vieira, 30, of Houston Estate, Georgetown, and labourer, Richie Sahadeo, 35, of Better Hope South, East Coast Demerara, were in the Accountants Office at the time of the robbery.
The gunmen who numbered three, two of whom armed with handguns, attacked and robbed Vieira and Sahadeo after holding them at gunpoint.
Richie Sahadeo was robbed of $70,000.00 while Michael Vieira was robbed of $4.1 million. During the process Richie Sahadeo was beaten about his body and shot in his knee by one of the perpetrators.
The belief is that the gunmen accidentally discharged the firearm while they were beating Sahadeo. They escaped in a waiting motor car.
Sahadeo was admitted to a private hospital for medical treatment. By last night he had undergone surgery. His condition is stable.
General Manager of the company, Edmund Vieira, said that he is glad that no one was killed.
