The Berbice schools Table Tennis two-day competition, which was slated for Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March at the Berbice High School auditorium, has been rescheduled to Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 April due to the unavailability of the proposed venue.
The tournament, which will be sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, will be played in five categories for both boys and girls. Play will be in the U10, U13, U15, U18 and U21 categories. With Participants expected to come from Primary and secondary schools both private and public the New Amsterdam and Upper Corentyne, Technical Institutes, the Port Mourant Training Centre and the University of Guyana Berbice campus.
In the interim the steering Committee of the Berbice Sub Association has taken the decision to intensify their training and coaching programmes especially for schools. As such over the next two Saturdays a number of training sessions have been organized for a number of venues in Both East and West Berbice in addition to sessions in the afternoons.
Beginning today, Saturday 19 March, four such sessions have been organized involving four coaches, Desiree Lancaster, Gibran Hussein and school teachers Jermaine Glasgow and Cordell Austin along with Floyd Conway beginning at 10:00 hrs each day. At the New Amsterdam Multilateral School (NAMS) Desire Lancaster will be in charge of sessions there. At the Berbice High School (BHS) Jermaine Glasgow will take players through there paces while at the Rose Hall Community Centre (RHCC) in East Canje Cordell Austin with assistance from Floyd Conway will be conducting sessions. Gibran Hussein will be conducting sessions at the Skeldon Community Centre.
Sessions are expected to continue next Saturday in the New Amsterdam /Canje Area, Blairmont Community Centre on the West Berbice and at Port Mourant Training centre Corentyne.
National coaches Linden Johnson and Ray Anderson are also expected to do stints.
The senior players in the county have also given a commitment to assist with coaching sessions.
Incentives will be available for the top three finishers and other outstanding performers in the respective categories.
Schools with tables and those interested in having coaching done at their respective school can make contact with any member of the steering committee.
Racquets, balls and other necessities are expected to be provided by the GTTA, However players are asked to walk with their racquets where possible.
President of the GTTA Commissioner of Police Henry Greene DSM is expected to be in attendance.
