The Ninth Pakaraima Mountain Safari, dubbed “the adventure of a lifetime”, was officially launched yesterday.
The annual event set for March 26, to April 2, 2011, is being organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce in collaboration with Rainforest Tours and the Ministry of Local Government.
The sponsors of the safari are the Guyana Oil Company (Guyoil) Castrol, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph, Air Services Limited and Geddes Grant.
Participants, including foreigners from Canada, Suriname and Jamaica in 4×4 vehicles, motorcycles and All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) will be plying the 529-mile trip from Georgetown to Region Nine and then into the Pakaraima Mountains in Region Eight, up to the Orinduik Falls.
The organisers are catering for approximately 30 vehicles and interested persons can register at Rainforest Tours at Avenue of the Republic and Robb Street (telephone # 231-5661) or contact the Guyana Tourism Authority or the Tourism Ministry office.
The final inspection for all participating vehicles will be done on Thursday at 14:00 hrs at Guyoil Service Station on Regent Street, in the city.
Manniram Prashad, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, speaking in the boardroom of his South Road Ministry in Georgetown said that the eight-day expedition is attracting serious adventurers both locally and internationally, which is evident of its growth and recognition.
He said that Mr. Cecil Beharry, a Guyanese who lives in Jamaica, will be participating in this year’s adventure for the third time and has brought his vehicle to take part in the safari.
“This is something new. This usually only happens for motor racing.”
Minister Prashad also announced that the safari which is a “real adventure” will be staged twice a year now. Another is planned for this coming August.
“As Guyana progresses in terms of tourism – eco, nature and adventure tourism, more and more people are becoming interested in what Guyana has to offer,” he said, hence ‘Destination Guyana’ continues to show a positive trend in visitors arrival.
