While the level of play has been high, this year’s Mayor’s Cup Football competition has been beset by adverse weather conditions that have left the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground in a sodden state and has resulted in several postponements.
The rains have now abated and the action is set to resume this Sunday March 20 with two spine tingling, ‘don’t you dare miss them’ matches. In the first encounter Sunburst Camptown will throw down the gauntlet on Bakewell Buxton Stars while in the feature attraction Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United goes head to head with BV Triumph United in what the pundits have described as a ‘battle for honours’ encounter.
Camptown would back their chances of moving into the next round on the boots of Reshawn Sandiford, Lance Rolston, Orlando Gilgeous and Troy Prescod who will be marshalling the midfield position while their opponents would be fielding capable players the likes of Sherwin Griffith, Rawle Phillips and Alixter Deene among others.
Alpha United may want to use their match against BV Triumph as useful practice for their assignment in the impending CFU tournament.
Meanwhile, the action spills over into the Phagwah holiday on Monday when Santos square off with Victoria Kings in the main supporting game to the BK International Western Tigers/Beacon FC showdown.
Organizer of the tournament, Lennox Arthur is urging the public to come out in their numbers and witness the quality matches. He is also grateful for the chivalry extended so far by several corporate entities and reiterated that he has recognized the financial challenges faced by the participating teams during preparations for the tournament.
To this extent, he has considerably increased the winning prizes.
The winners of the tournament receive one million dollars while the runners-up take home half that amount. The third and fourth place finishers receive two hundred thousand and one hundred thousand dollars, respectively.
