Dear Editor,
The dust has settled in the corridors of the People’s National Congress (PNC) with the election of a presidential candidate in a transparent and democratic manner. All eyes are now focused on the process that is to take place in the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP).
This process seems to be shrouded in controversy and mystery, which is quite dear to the general public. The purpose of this letter is to give my view for the main criteria for electing a PPP presidential candidate.
Some of us were around in the 1960’s when ethnic conflict nearly destroyed our fledgling nation. The PNC is to be credited with the substantial healing process which took pace between 1964 and 1992. However, the negative political management by the PPP since its election have created the conditions for a return of ethnic conflict, god forbid I do not advocate or have a desire to see such a situation, hence the need for presidential candidate on both sides of the political divide to pose, amongst others, the following qualities:
1 An intense desire to promote ethnic harmony and cooperation.
2 Substantial tolerance, patience and a deep understanding of the characteristics of our society.
3 Universal acceptability by the entire society.
4 An intense desire to re-establish the rule of law and to restart programmes to train and create jobs for our youth.
Anyone who knows the history of Brigadier David Granger would praise his role not only in the development of the people’s army which dedicates to the protection of our country and its people, but also to the development of our homeland.
He also played a historic role to the Establishment of the Guyana National Service and the Guyana Peoples Militia. Apart from being army commander he was a youth leader before he entered the Guyana defence Force.
Since leaving the army he has excelled at research into the history of Guyana, especially of Afro-Guyanese villages and was the publisher of an excellent magazine titled the Guyana Review, which went out of publication because of withdrawal of adverts by the PPP government.
He has also written several books on Guyanese history, the Guyana defence force, and national security. He is also a member of a hemispheric organisation which specialises in strategic studies, Inter nation relation and defence matters in our Hemisphere, with all of these responsibilities he still managed to obtain a masters degree in history from the University of Guyana.
These are qualities which can contribute substantially in tens of the criteria I mentioned above and therefore it is incumbent on the PPP, to select a candidate of like stature, competence and intellectual capacity.
So far the only person who is in the leadership line up that is capable of executing the above criteria is the Honorable Ralph Ramkarran Speaker of the National Assembly. Not only is Mr. Ramkarran a long standing member of the PPP has taken part in the field activities and all tasks assigned to him by the PPP especially when his great father Boysie Ramkarran was alive. The photographs of his leading picketers in Corentyne immediately come to mind.
He has impressed everyone with his qualities of integrity, honesty and hard work. He seems to have been able to stand above the maddening crowd in all negative activities that have occurred.
He is the senior partner in a prestigious law firm and earns a legitimate income. I therefore urge that he be given serious consideration to be the presidential candidate and a process be devised which is transparent and democratic to allow members of the PPP to express there views.
