– AAG host “re-run” Sunday
By Edison Jefford
Surging junior sprinter, Stephan James, will get another chance to prove that he is on par with, or even better than national ‘Junior Sportsman of the Year’, Chavez Ageday when the two clash for the third time in five months at the Police Sports Club Ground.
Not satisfied with the slushy conditions that pervaded the Eve Leary venue last Sunday, the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has decided to “re-run” the Youth and Junior Championships on a ground that is expected to be harder with sunshine anticipated.
Providing that there is no threatening rain over the next two days, the Police Sports Club Ground is expected to be in pristine shape for athletics. The intent behind the “re-run” is to ensure that all athletes get a fair chance at making the CARIFTA Games team.
Speaking briefly with Kaieteur Sport yesterday following the decision to have a “re-run”, head of the AAG, Colin Boyce said that they are of the view that some of the athletes that ran on Sunday could have been more impressive under better weather conditions.
Melissa Byass, for instance, who turned in a minute flat on a heavy track, beating national junior sprinter, Tiffany Carto in the process, will want to come up trumps again. The association was of the view that Byass could have gone faster on a compact surface.
The association has already indicated that Byass is under the microscope for the CARIFTA team following the performance. She will want to convince them that the examination is eminent with a better time under better conditions at the Police Sports Club Ground.
What should be much more intriguing than the Byass ascendency is the ongoing rivalry between Running Braves’ ace, James, and the national junior sportsman, Ageday. They have met twice at different levels before and Ageday edged James on both occasions, though last weekend’s win at Eve Leary was more convincing than his controversial win at the National School Championship at the National Stadium in November last year. Sunday will provide a third platform for both the athletes to continue the rivalry.
The AAG has its eyes on both Ageday and James for the CARIFTA Games, especially since the latter turned in 50.95 on the wet track last Sunday to win the Under-20 Boys’ 400m, but what has become a personal rivalry between them is by far, more intriguing.
Last weekend, James shot out his blocks like a rocket and held the lead for the first 150m in what was easily one of the best races, the U-20 Boys’ 200m, in the competition before Ageday’s 100m bottom-end speed overhauled the traditional quarter-miler in the race.
Ageday had 22.3 seconds at the end of the race while James had 22.6 seconds. James will ensure that he remind Ageday that he has to be almost perfect in his pet event, the 200m, to beat him. If not, it is possible that there could be a changing of the guard Sunday.
The AAG also said that the “re-run” is aimed at giving field athletes an opportunity to make the CARIFTA team given that they were unable to compete last Sunday. This weekend Inter-Guiana Games trials were re-scheduled to a date that will be announced later.
