Defending champions, Faculty of Natural Sciences, remained on course to retain their title when play in the UG Inter-Faculty Basketball Championships continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) Wednesday afternoon last.
The winning team swamped Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry 72-43 to claim a berth in the semi-finals after the conclusion of their qualifying group stage match.
When play continued yesterday afternoon, Technology rebounded from a close 2 point deficit to defeat Staff while the game between School of Earth and Environment Studies/School of Education and Humanities (SEESSEH) and Social Sciences was aborted after both teams failed to take the court.
Meanwhile, in yesterday’s game, Clayton Reece turned in a brilliant display and contributed 17 points from an overall total of 56 by Technology to lead his team’s scoring average while Gerald Harry scored a game high 19 albeit in a losing cause for Staff.
The game started slowly with each team battling valiantly to seize the initiative. Both sides demonstrated superb defensive techniques to the extent that it took all of five minutes before the first point was registered. Ryan Cummings opened Staff’s tally with a skillful bit of dribbling that easily evaded the clutches of Technology’s defensive lineup.
The battle for honours continued with both teams enjoying bright moments. However, at the end of the first half the score read 25-23 in favour of Staff.
Technology approached the second half with purpose and at one time had surged ahead by some eight points. As the game wound down, a determined Staff team quickly adjusted and closed the margin by some four points. They were, however, undone by some precision shots by Reece whose contribution came mostly from a series of inside shots and lay ups.
Meanwhile, the coordinator, Seivewright Benjamin had explained earlier that some of the players from several teams were unable to play due to examinations and other work related reasons.
Mr. Benjamin had said then that despite his efforts many of the students participating in the tournament have indicated that some of the matches are clashing with lectures or examinations. He had explained that the students were left with limited options and had chosen to write examinations and/or attend lectures rather than turn up for the games in question.
The odds were always against Agriculture when they faced Natural Sciences. This team had suffered an earlier loss to Faculty of Social Sciences in their opening game placing them in a must win situation.
Their initial approach did raise the hopes of their supporters as they looked set to make a contest of it. Spirited team efforts saw them taking the lead in the first ten minutes of the game. However, by the first break Natural Sciences had regained control and led by seven points. Things fell apart at the resumption when the Agriculture team looked a disorganized bunch with their principal marksman Ryan Dey, who eventually registered just 8 points, terribly off target. Natural Sciences then took control from around midway of the second half. Captain of the winning team, Hugh Arthur, tormented the opposition and eventually scored a game high 29 points. He received support from Kadeem Jacobs who bagged 18 points and Leron Jackson 16.
Meanwhile, Benjamin revealed that officials of the Tain University in Berbice have intimated that that institution was forced to pull out of the tournament citing work and school commitments.
“Most of the students work and cannot travel to Georgetown for the scheduled midday matches,” informed Benjamin. The coordinator further explained that he could not shift the games to another time since the management of the CASH had allotted a specific time period for the games. The action continues on Monday with two more exciting games.
