Dear Sports Editor,
The “accident or incidental shooting” that occurred on the ill-fated night of Friday, March 4, 2011 at the junction of Hibiscus Street, West Ruimveldt and Mandela Avenue, which resulted in the hospitalization of Dwayne Alli, whom I wish a speedy recovery was totally uncalled for. Before I attempt to comment further, may I, seize this opportunity to congratulate the bold initiative of the Georgetown Football Association Executive, towards instituting a temporary ban on the “shooter” pending the determination of the matter.
Sir, without fear or favour, without malice or prejudice, is this what our society needs? And by extension the world’s most popular; emotional and entertaining sport! A “gunslinger” for a Club President who was a failure as Chairman of the GFA/IMC. But nevertheless is still revered by the upper echelons of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) fraternity. That the individual was among the special invitees of the recently held GFF Annual Awards Dinner and International football matches.
At this juncture Mr. Editor, may I publicly enquire why there has been no publicized statement from the GFF executive? While it is fortunate that Alli’s life and career is not being threatened. The mere idea that Mr. Gordon Gilhuys, Attorney-at-Law and President of B.K International Western Tigers could have resorted to such excessive force, in defiance of constitutionality and standard procedures pertaining to football, have once more left an “indelible stain” on the sport.
As such a permanent life ban (persona non-grata) from all related football activities remain the order of the day, since others with less incident (s) were issued with that status. Unless we further descend into the bottomless pit of anarchy! This now brings me to the essential point of the convenient application of rules, despite the fact that the game is being brought into disrepute. At the conclusion of the inaugural 2009 GFF Super League at the National Stadium, Providence, which reigning champions Alpha United had won following a come from behind 2-1 victory over GDF, in the finals.
A GDF player was seen gesticulating at one of the refereeing personnel, when they were leaving the field of play which was witnessed by none other than the GFF President, Mr. Colin Klass, who enquired of the player’s name. Being within hearing distance my initial response was the name doesn’t matter, since it can be easily accessed from the team’s list as the number on the uniform was visible. At that time I was then the elected Secretary of the eventual third place winner Sunburst Camptown, and was privy to make an appearance on behalf of 5 players, who were all summoned to a hearing before the Disciplinary Committee of the GFF, in relation to various offences of misconduct. Apart from one player, who was reprimanded and placed on a 6 month bond, the others received suspensions ranging from 1-3 matches. The offending player from theGDF was never summoned to a hearing. Herein lies convenient application of the rules!
In the final analysis Mr. Gilhuys’ actions clearly demonstrates that the individual is an unwanted guest of football. And there is no need for him to be summoned to a Disciplinary Hearing. But rather to apply the constitutional ruling pertaining to ‘bringing the game into disrepute’. “ Praise Ye Father Almighty” that the individual didn’t accede to the presidency of the GFA. Or else it would have been “Gunfight at O.K Coral” at General Council Meetings, if decisions did not go in his favour!
