An unrest at the New Amsterdam penal complex on Tuesday some time around min-morning resulted from a senior officer changing certain rules which prisoners were not accustom to.
Kaieteur News was made to understand that the said officer was lately transferred from Mazaruni Prison to New Amsterdam.
Details of the precise rules that were changed and to what extent they have affected inmates are still sketchy.
Nevertheless, this publication understands that the preparation and distribution of meals was one of the issues that sparked the turbulence. The jail population is just over 200. During the instability, prisoners damaged furniture and the mess hall utensils.
It was only after some hours that the prison authorities were able to stabilise the situation. There was no report of breach in security at the said jail.
“All these prisoners were doing is protesting against the rules that the new officer implemented, they indicated no signs of breaking out from the detention center,” said a prison warden.
When questioned about the profile of inmates who initiated the disturbances, the warden said that all of the inmates at the jail were involved.
The Director of Prisons paid a visited yesterday to the facility in the Ancient County.
Up to press time, efforts to have a senior prison official from the New Amsterdam prison comment on the issue prove ineffectual.
