The recent pronouncement by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) as it relates to the work of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has been dismissed as another ‘red herring’ by that party to distract the nation.
This is according to the Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition and Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Robert Corbin, who yesterday said that the tactic was just a follow on to the comments by the President made at Babu John recently.
Corbin said that he is not aware of any work of the commission being stymied by the absence of any of the commissioners.
He added that there have been meetings and the work of the commission of ongoing.
Corbin did concede the absence of Charles Corbin who is currently overseas with family problems but assured that the commissioner is in contact with the commission via email.
Corbin said that the ruling administration is merely seeking to distract from the real issues at hand that has to be resolved.
He said that had there been a real problem with the work of GECOM then it is the duty of the Chairman of the Commission to make a pronouncement.
Corbin insisted that there is no hold up in the work of the commission pointing out that yesterday a meeting was held with the Commission and the political parties in an effort to prepare for the claims and objections period.
The PPP on Tuesday last said that it is very concerned at the fact that it is drawing close to the period of “Claims and Objections” but the Commission is not meeting, due to lack of a quorum.
This, however, was been debunked by a well placed source close to the Commission who says that there has been several meetings held this year.
The PPP in its statement noted that one member of the Commission recommended by the opposition leader has not attended any meeting for the year and the other two are often absent which leads to meetings not being held.
The PPP said that, “This can affect the preparatory work for the up-coming elections.”
Speaking with this newspaper the source pointed out that the commission is aware that the member whom the PPP referred to (Charles Corbin) as not having attended meetings, would be travelling at the time. And whilst he was overseas his father-in-law died, and it was pointed out that the commission was aware of that fact which caused him to extend his stay.
The source insists that work has been ongoing and opined that the PPP’s statement was mischievous.
