Milerock Football Club posing before the start of their game against Intermoengatope at the MSC Ground.
By Franklin Wilson
Unlike the first leg game which was played in heavy conditions on Sunday last at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground where host team Milerock lost 1-0 to Suriname’s Intermoengatope on debut in the CFU Club Champions Cup, the return game on Saturday is set for the Andre Kamperveen Stadium and the weather there has been good from all reports.
The word from Head Coach of the Milerock side which leaves Guyana today overland for Suriname, Brian Joseph, is that they are going all out for victory on Saturday.
“We are definitely going for a win against this team. Our first objective though is to score then push for victory. We have seen what they have to offer despite the playing conditions in the first game and we believe that we have what it takes to beat this team. “We are not going to Suriname to play defensive football but at the same time we would not be complacent. Whatever they bring to us we are capable of doing better and a win is what is foremost in our minds.”
Milerock matched their opponents for almost the entire match on Sunday last, dominating play for long periods but a defensive lapse with two minutes to game time cost them the game when substitute Junglo Brunswick headed a corner kick into the back of the nets at the first post which was unmanned.
The Linden based side which finished as the runner-up to National Club champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United in the Guyana Football Federation Super League which was sponsored by FIFA under the Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF Initiative, would have preferred to be heading to the neighbouring country with a 0-0 result but that was not to be.
Their {Milerock} resolve and determination will now be tested since they have nothing to lose as they eye a place in the second round with a win.
Alpha United are already through to the second round after their first round opponents, Bassa Sports Club of Antigua & Barbuda had pulled out of the tournament citing lack of finances as the main reason.
Former National forward Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules, who played well in the first leg clash, will be hoping to be even more clinical upfront for Milerock on Saturday evening.
Hercules had several opportunities to rock the nets, did so in the 31st minute but it was deemed offside by T&T Referee Lee Davis.
Hercules, the most senior player on the team has played at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium many times before and will be seeking to lead from the front and be a role model for the many younger players in the line-up.
Captain Marlon Maxius, Kayode McKinnon, Keiron Cameron, Quacy Johnson, Owen Williams, Denver Dennis, Ryan Crandon, Clive Nobrega, Oswald Benjamin, Steve Brewley, Alesta Johnson and goalkeepers Derrick Carter and Clifton Haley will have to combine forces with the younger brigade in order to pull off what would be a huge win, once achieved.
Hercules is doubling as Assistant Coach with Errol Dainty as the other Assistant Coach while Claude Williams is the Team Manager.
The winner of this home and away tie will face the winner of the series between Trinidad &Tobago Pro League champions, Defence Force and Bermudan champions, Dandy Town Hornets. Defence Force only need a draw in Saturday’s return clash set for the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella T&T from 16:30hrs after earning a 1–1 draw on Thursday last in Bermuda.
Defence Force has won the CFU Club title twice in club history, in 1985 and 1987 while it has captured the CONCACAF Champions League crown in 1985 with a 2–1 home-and-away aggregate win over Honduran club, CD Olimpia in the final.
The second round is scheduled for the weeks of April 12–14 and April 22–24, while the semifinal will take place in the Twin Island Republic from May 25 with the final and third-place games set for four days later.
The semifinal winners and third placed club will qualify for the 2011-2012 CONCACAF Champions League. Puerto Rico has qualified each season of the Champions League’s three-year existence.
