Sixty-one year old Savitri Ramdeen whose Albouystown house collapsed on March 1, last, is appealing to the public for assistance so that she could build a small structure which she can once again call her home.
Ramdeen, whose house was situated at Lot 21 Hill Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, was walking up her wooden stairs about 11:00 hrs heard a “cracking noise” and felt a slight tremor as her foot touched the fourth treader.
Ramdeen told this newspaper that she quickly turned around and rushed to the safety of the ground below. She realised that something was amiss.
Savitri Ramdeen who is pleading with the public for assistance to help rebuild her home which collapsed at its Albouystown location on March 1.
She witnessed her entire house shifting to the right side then crashed. The noise brought neighbours running out of their homes.
Yesterday at the location which once held the old, wooden bungalow, some boards were neatly packed in a corner while what was left of the house stood askew.
Ramdeen had explained that though her home was not fully furnished, there were some ornaments and furniture which were damaged inside the house along with kitchen utensils and some personal items.
Yesterday, she said that though she has received some food items, pots, basins, buckets and a mattress from the Guyana Relief Council (GRC), she was turned down by the Food for the Poor organization when she visited them for assistance in rebuilding her home.
Ramdeen said that the Organization explained to her that it “does not really make houses for people living in Georgetown. If it was some other area then; but not in town”.
She was offered lodging at the GRC for a period of two months, however, she opted to stay with a friend temporarily until she could get her home rebuilt.
Ramdeen added, “After two months I would have to move and I ain’t able move from place to place so I by my friend until my house can be rebuilt”.
Ramdeen pleaded “I don’t know if anyone anywhere can help me…even if they help me build a small something I would be grateful”.
Anyone wishing to render assistance to this unfortunate woman can contact her on telephone # 687-3513.
