Kenrick Shamlall of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, was dealt multiple chops around his body on his worksite at De Kinderen Sideline Dam. West Coast Demerara, yesterday.
The man was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he received stitches for his wounds, was given medication and discharged.
Eyewitness told this newspaper that two men armed with cutlasses, some time around 11:00 hours yesterday, walked towards Shamlall and his co-worker and started chopping. Shamlall retaliated but his coworker stood still and the men left him alone.
According to reports the labourers were contracted to dig the sideline trench to reduce flooding in the area. However, upon conducting their job two young men with cutlasses walked up to them and demanded cash and a gold chain one of them were wearing.
Shamlall who described one of his attackers as short and the other as a man of mixed race. He said that his co worker stood still and the attackers did not really do him anything.
He added that he tried to fight back after his attacker grabbed his 15 pennyweight gold chain and $100,000. Fortunately his served chops were not severe.
“Thank God for my safety jacket. If it wasn’t for that I would have been badly chopped,” said the victim.
Shamlall said that he was very surprised with the attack because he had only stared working there the previous day.
“I only working there a day ago. The people don’t know me much less to know what I have, I can’t see how them come to rob me.”
Shamlall alleged that he believes the villagers know exactly who the robbers are but don’t want to give information to the police because they fear the consequences.
According to eye witness, the robbers live few villages away from where the incident occurred. One of the attackers was reportedly identified as “Cash Money”.
