Government and the makers of Bakewell bread are collaborating to construct a soup kitchen capable of catering for over 2,500 persons daily.
The building is currently under construction on Brickdam, next door to the Palms Geriatic Home.
The kitchen is expected to cater meals for over 2,500 persons per day including, “but not limited to persons who find themselves displaced and on the streets,” a statement from the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security said yesterday.
Meals will be distributed free of cost and it is expected that visitors shall have access to bathroom and shower facilities and personal assistance, a fresh change of clothes and lunch which will be served from 11:00hrs and 15:00hrs daily.
A “take-away bowl” would also be enjoyed by beneficiaries.
Owner of Bakewell, Naeem Nasir, is quoted in the release as saying that providing a soup kitchen has always been a dream.
Minister Priya Manickchand also noted that the government is “extremely pleased to be engaging with a member of the private sector to further provide service to Guyana’s people and would welcome other such initiatives by other persons”.
This facility is presently being constructed and is scheduled to be opened August this year.
