The poor must really suffer

Dear Editor,
With joy and some sadness, my husband and I went to the Pomeroon to visit my family, and to visit the grave of my father, who passed away four months ago.
I am the daughter of the Pomeroon soil. Even though I left my home land twenty-two years ago, I am still very much connected to my family and my roots. On the day of my arrival at charity my family all came to greet me, and took us home where we were to spend a few days.
Tuesday March 1, 2011, my husband became ill, and was seen by the doctor at Dr. Joseph Hospital at Charity about 11.30pm. My husband required medical aid, but through a lack of proper equipment, and shortage of supplies, my husband was administered a device for comfort and relief, for he was having some discomfort.
He was sent home to return at 3pm the next day for the device to be removed. This removal was done by a nurse and not the doctor.
In my opinion, this device was removed much too  early, and my husband was sent home. Around midnight early Thursday my husband was rushed back to the said hospital. While there I had to use the toilet. and was shocked to find no water, no toilet paper, and a toilet filled with paper and feces.
In my distraught state I was told my husband had to be rushed to Suddie Hospital because he required Emergency Care.
The porter was required to have a w/c ready for my husband, but he was nowhere in sight.
After much confusion my husband was driven in an ambulance accompanied by a nurse and myself to Suddie Hospital.
After a rough and tough ride, we arrived to be greeted by smiling porters, and gentle nurses with remarkable expertise. My husband’s life was saved. He required emergency surgery.
I give praised and thanks to the doctor, surgeon, the matron, and the entire team that provided the care my husband needed during his stay at Suddie Hospital, Essequibo.
My disappointment at Charity Hospital, the lack of medical supplies, the insanitary conditions, and the lack of performance when on duty. I could only imagine how the very poor must be suffering.
