GAPF boss believes athletes can capture best lifter titles in all classes
With Friday being the deadline to book their tickets for next week’s 5th IPF/NAPF Caribbean Powerlifting Championships to be held in Georgetown, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (March 23-26), the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) is still struggling to accumulate the required funds to send a strong team.
Last week, the federation said after careful consideration they were forced to trim the team to six (6) members including one from the original shortlist of eight (8).
With the slothful response from corporate Guyana for assistance the GAPF has now trimmed the team to four (4) lifters; the Men’s Open Champion (Randolph Morgan), Men’s Junior Champion (Anis Ade Thomas), Men’s Masters M1 Champion (‘Big’ John Edwards) and Woman’s Open Champion (Dawn Barker).
The approximate cost per athlete is US$1,500 and the cost of air fare is likely to be more based on the late booking.
Kaieteur Sport understands that the Ministry of Sport has pledged some level of assistance to the team, while GAPF President Peter Green who was scheduled to travel with the team has disclosed that he will no longer make the trip but will be donating his monies to one of the athletes.
The federation has been helping themselves also and last Saturday held a fund raising bar-b-que which has raked in the vicinity of $125,000 – app US$605.
What is interesting to note is that the athletes selected are all in line to win their respective categories and set new Caribbean records based on the new IPF weight categories that have been implemented by the governing body which came into effect as of January 1, 2011.
This means that all previous records have been thrown through the window.
GAPF President Peter Green said that he is backing his lifters to create history by capturing all the best lifter overall titles in the Men’s open, Men’s Junior, Men’s Masters M1 and Women’s Open.
Green was hoping the federation could have been able to send more lifters so that Guyana could retain the team title which they won for the first time when the championships were hosted here last year at the Princess Hotel, Providence, East Bank Demerara. To be in contention for the team title, he informed that at least five (5) male lifters out the full eight (8) must attend to get the job done.
A total of 76 entries from seven (7) member countries will participate in this year’s championships.
Based on the nominations submitted (as of March 09, 2011) for the championships, following is the placing of the Guyanese among the other competitors.
