What does TTT mean? If you read my Saturday piece you’ll know that a group of protestors have stormed one of the luxury homes of the Gaddafi family in London and have taken it over. They formed themselves into a protest movement by the name, Topple The Tyrants (TTT). In countries, like Guyana, Russia, Pakistan, Venezuela where elections have produced elected dictatorship, citizens should form their own TTTs.
We need a TTT in Guyana. It should be open to all those who feel the Guyana Government has gone over the edge and is heading down the road of wanton destruction. The Guyana version of TTT can play a part in saving us.
Guyana’s Topple The Tyrants need not exclude members from other political parties. It must to be broad-based and ought to attract the student movement from all over Guyana.
Guyana’s politics has deteriorated tragically from the glorious days of the Catholic Church under the leadership of Bishop Benedict Singh (now retired).
Today, we hear and see nothing about the life and work of this retired clergyman but it was under his leadership, the Roman Catholic Church gave us one of the finest moments in liberation teleology. The vigorous, valorous pursuit for free and fair elections would not have been successful had it not been for the defiant role of the Catholic Church.
Standing out in those days were priests among whom were Harold Wong, Andrew Morrison and Malcolm Rodrigues. The first two are deceased.
In this regard one must be disappointed with the reticence of Father Malcolm Rodrigues. With his trademark, Guevara-like, black beret, Rodrigues symbolised the power and influence of liberation teleology in Guyana.
With charisma, dedication and style, he influenced a generation to confront the Burnham dictatorship. No one hears about him in today’s Guyana. His WPA colleagues are not as energetic as they were back in the seventies but their voices are still there – Andaiye, Rupert Roopnaraine, Tacuma Ogunseye, Clive Thomas, David Hinds, Nigel Westmaas.
All of these activists have agreed that the elected dictatorship in this land at the moment have far exceeded the fascist features of the Burnham autocracy but nowhere to be found is Father Malcolm Rodrigues.
I read he has accepted a position on one the Rights Commissions. I cannot fathom how such a historical figure could have gone silent but would we mortals ever understand our fellow human beings?
It would have been nice to see Father Rodrigues in the leadership of the Guyana version of Topple the Tyrants. Mark Benschop these days is preaching the word of God, and knowing his style, one wonders if he is the reincarnation of Malcolm Rodrigues?
He would have to don the Guevara-like beret. Knowing Benschop’s stand on communism, I think he would prefer the French version of the famous male head wear. The objective of Topple the Tyrants in this country is to expose and confront our King Kongs who act above the law.
I hope and dream that as the days and weeks unfold we can have out Topple the Tyrants.
The Guyana tyrants have engaged in horrible excesses that in most countries in the world would have seen the kind of outburst that is sweeping many of the Arab dictatorships. In these times, the need to invoke the spirit of Walter Rodney has become extremely pressing.
One of Rodney’s phenomenal strategies was to paint the dictators in Guyana in his era in grotesque forms so people, when they see the caricatures, will be galvanized to act. Walter’s use of the chant, “King Kong” had become infectious.
We have a new King Kong roaming the land. Is the King Kong of 2011 “badder” than when Walter in the seventies stigmatised President Burnham as the Asian gorilla? Strangely, none of the political parties are adopting this strategy of Walter. No one is chanting “King Kong must go.” Is David Granger willing to go that route? Granger isn’t going to sit in Robert Corbin’s seat.
His fierce rebuttal to Mr. Jagdeo’s Babu John’s incitement was a break with Mr. Corbin’s muted deliveries. Granger came out fighting referring to child molesters and pedophiles in the Office of the President; formidable indictments from an opposition leader that not even Berlusconi has been accused of.
Of course Berlusconi deals with women. Nuff women! You can call him a womanizer and you may not be far off the mark. So in the mood that Granger is in, will we see the King Kong chant? Or will it come from Benschop, Lincoln Lewis and maybe me?
