Residents of the New Herstelling Housing (GuySuCo) Scheme, East Bank Demerara, aback of the Buddy’s Scheme are calling on the Herstelling Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) to renovate the severely damaged roads and to clean the clogged drains in the scheme.
They say that the potholes are so large that the bottoms of cars are being damaged when they enter and exit the scheme. “This place got one entrance and exit for years, and these potholes are so large than when the place flood you can break your foot if you fall in a hole when walking on the road.”
When this newspaper visited the scheme the roads were in shambles and since it was raining incessantly the drains were also clogged.
According to one of the residents, last year the NDC visited the scheme and patched some of the potholes in the road, however, he said it was shoddy work since no roller was used to compress the material. “They throw brick and sand and used a truck to run over it….the NDC has done nothing proper since they take over from GuySuCo in 2008.”
It was also explained that often residents would have to gather builders waste and sand to build or fill certain sections of the road that are severely damaged.
“Every six months people from the NDC come and clean the drains, and we have to suffer for another six months with flooding.”
According to the Chairman of the Herstelling NDC, Bibi Zamdena Sookdeo, the NDC did some patching last September in the scheme where crush and run mixed with loam and sand was used to fill the holes. However, when the council receives its annual $3M subvention, more works will be done in the scheme, she said.
She said that although residents are complaining about various issues that need funding, there are many who have not paid their rates and taxes.
However, as soon as the weather permits the NDC will be engaged in works within the scheme.
