A Georgetown man who traveled to Berbice during the Berbice leg of the Mashramani celebrations is in jail. While in the company of others, he allegedly took the liberty to rob a senior police officer and then fled back to the city.
Linden Green, 31, of Non Pareil Street, Albouystown was remanded yesterday when he appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
He had pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery with violence that stemmed from the allegation that he robbed the police officer of one gold chain valued $100,000.
Prosecutor Corporal Sherlock King told the court that on February 27, last, around 18:00 hrs during the Mashramani celebrations in Berbice, Cadet Officer Rovin Dass was in the vicinity of Main and Pitt Streets when he was approached by four men, one of whom was Linden Green.
As the men drew near to the police officer they grabbed on to him and a scuffled ensued during which they robbed him of his gold and made good their escape.
It is understood that the officer recognised Green as a man from Georgetown, because he had encountered him on a number of occasions before in Georgetown.
A report was made at the Central Police Station, but the men had fled.
However, a drag net was set up and Green was arrested on Tuesday March 8, in Albouystown, Georgetown.
He will have to return to court on April 1.
And the man who allegedly assaulted two police officers and went berserk to avoid being taken before the court last Friday, was yesterday placed on $40,000 bail.
Fitzroy Williams, 39, a labourer of Glasgow, East Bank Berbice, also appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo to answer four charges — two counts each of assaulting a peace officer and two counts each of resisting arrest.
Corporal Sherlock King told the court that last Wednesday, at Glasgow, Williams assaulted Cadet Officer Singh and Corporal Brandt.
The policemen had responded to a report that someone was digging up iron from a private property in the Glasgow area without permission.
Upon their arrival the police were shown the suspect, whom they cautioned and told to desist from the activity.
Instead, the man challenged the police and started to behave in a disorderly manner, using indecent language.
As the police were about to arrest Williams, he allegedly pushed Brandt away and as Singh intervened he allegedly cuffed him.
Williams was however overpowered, arrested and taken to the Central Police Station, where he was charged.
When he was taken to court on Friday he refused to go before the Magistrate. He tore his clothes, then proceeded to daub feces on his skin, all the time protesting his innocence. He was then taken back to the police station lockups.
In court he was granted $10,000 bail on each count and will have to return to court on 1st April.
