– Mohandatt named MVP
Regardless of the current unstable situation of basketball in the Mining Town, Linden Technical Institute (LTI) restored some pride Sunday night with an impressive performance in the under-19 final of the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) Challenge.
LTI proved why Linden is such an important component of national basketball when they edged the highest academic institution in Guyana, the University of Guyana (UG), 48-44 in overtime in a game that was deadlocked at 38 apiece after regulation time.
They were not only more properly uniformed, but LTI ensured that there major offensive players fired at the same time. National junior players, Geoffrey LaRose and Marlon Pollydore both had 17 points to seal the win against the hapless University in overtime.
Richard Mohandatt, who is LaRose and Pollydore’s national junior counterpart, was a one-man army Sunday night with 23 points. Mohandatt had earlier won the YBG Individual Challenge at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, but his heroics in the game was simply not enough to overcome the combination of LaRose and Pollydore in the mammoth game.
For his single-handed efforts throughout the tournament, Mohandatt was named Most Valuable Player (MVP). The Andrew Williams-led Cummings Lodge Secondary won the under-16 title in a walkover against Saint Stanislaus College that had refused to play.
