Early yesterday morning children making their way to the Kawall Primary School in Canal Number Two Polder discovered a man’s body floating in a trench.
Reports are that the discovery was made some time around 07:30 hours yesterday. The man has since been identified as 58 year-old Mohamed Shadeek Hanniff of Stanleytown West Bank Demerara.
A resident who spoke with this publication said that after the children saw the man in the trench they immediately raised an alarm and the police were called in. Undertakers from the Dawn and Ezekiel Funeral Home later removed the man’s remain.
As police searched the man’s body, they found a small amount of cash in his possession. This newspaper was told that the man may have been paid by one of his employers on Sunday.
One of the man’s relatives, Joan Sudarson, said that they last saw ‘Gugu’ about three days ago. He would always distance himself from other family members, she said.
She said that man lived alone and would rarely visit them. Sudarson added that she received a telephone call informing her of Hanniff’s death. They were subsequently invited to the funeral home to make a positive identification.
The man was said to be an alcoholic and performed odds jobs for residents of Canal Number Two.
This newspaper was told that Hanniff, also called ‘Gugu’, was last seen yesterday afternoon consuming alcohol. He then left saying he was headed home.
Reports are that some time late yesterday the man may have stumbled into a trench. His footwear and an umbrella were found not far from the body.
Sources close to the investigation said that they do not suspect foul play as there were no marks of violence on his body. The man was found stuck between some pipelines in the trench.
