Immigration officials have decided to release a Queens immigrant who had been held without a bail hearing since November after his story appeared in the Daily News.
Rafeik Baksh, 40, faces deportation because of a 17-year-old conviction. He had been held in New Jersey’s Monmouth County Jail without the right to bail because he was nabbed at an airport.
After he was freed on humanitarian parole, the father of seven and construction worker went right to a Richmond Hill school and picked up his kids.
“They were like, ‘Is this a miracle? Is my father really home?’” Baksh said.
Baksh, who has lived in New York since his teens and had successfully renewed his green card recently, will argue his case before an immigration judge next week.
He was returning from a vacation in his homeland of Guyana when the feds flagged his 1994 attempted-robbery conviction.
Baksh’s situation is becoming more common, experts say, as the government moves to deport longtime resident immigrants with criminal histories.
ICE did not return a request for comment.
