Three days of persistent rainfall have left residents of Meadow Bank with flooded roadways and homes.
Residents told Kaieteur News that they were still wading through knee-deep water in the mornings especially, and occupants of lower-flats in parts of the village have to move their household appliances from off the ground and placed them on chairs or took them to higher flats.
They said that the situation is frustrating and the dams need to be built higher, or “the government should purchase a pump for the area so we can faster relieve…. the outfall channel that is chockful with stuff and the koker needs to be cleaned.
It was noted that water lodged in residents’ yards are posing a danger to the health of the residents especially the children.
Deputy City Engineer, Lloyd Alleyne, yesterday told this newspaper, that the major contributory factor to the flooding is the inability of the koker to function to its maximum because the fishing vessels are moored in the outfall channel.
He said the issues with the fishing vessels have been acknowledged by the Ministry of Local Government and the Drainage and Irrigation Authority. However, the situation remains unchanged.
The result is that the koker is operating at less than half its capacity.
It was noted that the matter was brought to the attention of the Minister of Local Government who met with them as well as the management of the Greater Georgetown Fishermen’s Co-operative Society Limited.
