Albion#1 of Corentyne made full use of home court advantage to upstage favourite Rollers Volleyball club of New Amsterdam when the two teams met in the final of the Berbice Volleyball Association inter club “B” division competition which was played on Sunday March 13 at the Albion Community Centre Hard Court.
The two teams made it to the final after a grueling day of Volleyball to emerge winners of their respective groups.
In the final Albion #1 held their nerve and with good all round play were able to surmount their more seasoned opponents 25-21 in a ding dong battle.
Ten teams participated in competition with the teams being divided into two groups. The teams were- Albion #1, 2 & 3, Eaglets, Port Mourant Jaguars, Falcon of Canje and Rollers of New Amsterdam and GTC/PM # 1 and 2. The teams in the groups first played each other in a round robin format, with the top two teams emerging to play in the final. Albion #1 had emerged winner of group one while Rollers played unbeaten in group two.
At the presentation ceremony held immediately after the competition, President of the BVA Gregory Rambarran thanked the teams for participating and congratulated the winners and those who received incentives.
Vice President, Levi Nedd in his remarks, while echoing the sentiments expressed by Rambarran also mentioned the upcoming events planned by the Association. Teams were urged to make sure that their officials are properly trained and urged to submit the names of at least three persons for a training course in refereeing which will be conducted shortly.
The tournament was witnessed by a sizeable crowd which included former national player and donor of the winning trophy Mr. Bennie Sukra proprietor of N&B Convenience Store in New Amsterdam.
Trophies and medals were presented to the winning and runner up teams as well as the outstanding individual players. The N&B Sukra Trophy for first place went to Albion #1 while the BVA second place trophy went to Rollers Volleyball club.
In the individual category, the Most Valuable Player award was taken by Mukesh Kumar Umrao of Albion#1, Most outstanding spikier was Zade Quintyn of Rollers.
While two players received awards for most promising players they were Randy Jaggernauth of Falcons and Abdul Lawrence of GTC –PM 2.
