Residents of the developing housing scheme of Parfait Harmonie are now appealing for police protection and street lights in their community to deter criminals.
Speaking to Kaieteur News, a resident who gave her name as Babitta Singh said that as home builders purchase their construction materials, thieves are making good of the opportunity.
“We in here are really going through some serious problems. Soon as we buy our house materials dem bandits going away with it”.
“This cannot be fair we are punishing to buy our house materials and persons who lay at home all day long are reaping the benefit of our labour.
“The police station is so far…by the time they reach de thief dem does don reach Georgetown…we need a police outpost”.
The resident noted that these thieves are well known in the community.
The only police station which is accessible to villagers is La Grange Police Station that is some miles away.
Residents went on to make reference to the vandalising of the multi-purpose building which was recently declared open by the Minister of Housing and Water.
Singh said that on the night of the incident; persons in the community risked their lives in confronting the bandits who were stripping the building of its electrical fittings. Police arrived hours later.
“We risked our lives and confront those bandits. What if they had a gun? You in see is dead we would a dead? That is how de police outpost can play a major role in protecting the community of Parfait Harmonie” said Singh.
The woman related that some time early last year, the Minister of Housing and Water Irfaan Ali paid a visit to the community and promised lots of developments, but according to her none have been forthcoming.
Singh added that during that meeting, Ally assured residents that he would form a neighbourhood policing group, which is still to be a reality.
The woman added that even if the Home Affairs Minister used one of the numerous vacant lands to place a mobile outpost, the gesture would be most welcome.
In an interview with this newspaper, a security guard working at the abandoned dairy complex said that he often witnessed several illegal activities while on night duty.
The guard stated that having worked at the site for quite sometime; he is familiar with persons who pass in and out on their personal business. He affirmed that it is a particular group that is rampant in the community.
“Persons who buy their house materials will bring them in during the day but why would they wait until nights to transport it back out? That makes no sense”.
This publication understands that these stolen materials are sometime marketed to persons in the same community.
“Sometime you can see boys coming by your house to ask if yo want cement or steel rods to buy, and selling it really cheap so persons buy them”. This, one woman noted, is encouraging the thieves in their wrong doings.
“You see if when they thief yo materials and persons ain’t buy it from them they will stop with their nonsense,” the irritated woman added.
The absence of street lights is also a pressing issue in the housing scheme of Parfait Harmonie. Residents believe that even street lights are installed at major intersections, they will serve their purpose.
There have been frequent complaints of robberies by persons who use the road on their way home during the nights. Just lately, a couple while walking on the main access road was robbed of their cellular phones, gold jewelry and money by some youngsters on bicycle.
According to the couple, they decided not to report the matter to the police because they were unable to recognise the youths. The robbery victim said that on the night of the incident the streets were very dark and after being robbed the boys made a dash into a cross street.
Since the housing scheme was established there was one incident where a woman was raped by two teenage boys.
After intense investigation, lawmen were able to apprehend one suspect. That person was incarcerated for several years but was recently freed.
