A 76 year-old mechanic popularly called ‘Uncle Joe,’ escaped death yesterday morning after he was pinned in his seat for close to half an hour after the bus he was travelling slammed into a tree at Supply, on the East Bank of Demerara.
The accident occurred shortly after 06:00hrs when eyewitnesses say that the mini-bus driver who was heading north, lost control and slammed into a tree.
One woman was immediately sent to the hospital. ‘Uncle Joe’ was eventually freed after several valiant efforts and was rushed to the hospital with a suspected broken leg.
Persons who converged at the scene had said that the driver was seen at the Clash of the Titans show at the National Stadium hours before the accident.
Some said that the man seemed to be still intoxicated at the time of the accident.
He fled the scene and up to press time it was unclear if he was apprehended.
