Carifesta Avenue crash…
Deputy Cabinet Secretary and Permanent Secretary (PS) Office of the President, Dr. Nanda Gopaul, has compensated the couple that owns the car he rammed into Friday night.
Colin Loncke, the driver, told Kaieteur News yesterday that Gopaul has given monetary compensation to his wife, Jennifer, who was injured during the crash.
According to Mr. Loncke, Dr. Gopaul had also made a promise, in writing, to buy him a new car.
“He apologised to me…the matter is settled,” Loncke said.
However, Kaieteur News was unable to ascertain whether the other injured passenger, identified as Dwayne Blair, was also compensated.
The Permanent Secretary declined comment when Kaieteur News contacted him yesterday.
The accident occurred around 20:00 hrs on Friday in the vicinity of the Guyana Legion headquarters on Carifesta Avenue.
Mr. Loncke had alleged that his wife was about to enter his car when Dr. Gopaul slammed into the back of the vehicle. His wife sustained injuries to her hips and shoulders, while Blair suffered a laceration to the scalp.
The victims are members of the From the Heart Ministry, and had just left a church meeting at the Guyana Legions headquarters when misfortune struck.
However, Dr. Gopaul claimed that he was driving behind Loncke when he was forced to swerve from two minibuses and crashed into Loncke’s vehicle.
Dr Gopaul was still at the scene when Kaieteur News arrived, and smelled of alcohol.
However, he denied that he had been drinking.
Police traffic ranks escorted both men to the Brickdam Police Station.
Gopaul was allowed to drive to the station.
Kaieteur News was told that a senior police officer then instructed the traffic ranks to release Gopaul on his own recognizance.
It is unclear whether he took a breathalyzer test and what the results were.
