– Saints remain unbeaten in U-16 Contest
It was a titanic individual battle of the Williams yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on the second day of the Youth Basketball Guyana Challenge (YBG) when Saint Stanislaus College took on Cummings Lodge Secondary in the Under-16 competition.
Saints’ Darroll Williams prevailed over his Cummings Lodge rival, Andrew Williams to lead his school to a 47-13 rout of Cummings Lodge. Darroll had 23 points against a school that places the entire offensive burden on the diminutive shoulders of Andrew.
Quacy Johnson had 10 points to support Darroll, but the Herculean and skilful efforts of the just about four feet tall Andrew stood out like a candle light in a blackout. Andrew played the full 32 minutes of the game and tried his best to renounce the Saints.
The young and skilful point guard scored six of his eight points in the first half that ended 17-8 in favour of Saints. Andrew did everything; he collected rebounds, penetrated the paint, nailed a three-point jumper, played defence, but just didn’t get help.
Darrol was too much for Cummings Lodge on offence. Saints moved to the top of the four-team U-16 group with their second consecutive win yesterday after beating Plaisance on the first day, Friday.
Cummings Lodge had dismissed Marian Academy.
Up to Kaieteur Sport’s press time, competition in the Under-19 quarterfinals was underway. The YBG Challenge wraps up today. The semi-finals, and finals, in the two categories will be played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall along with the Skills Challenge final.
