Region Six Education Officer, Mrs Shafiran Bhajan, has refuted allegations of neglect by parents of the Black Bush Secondary School.
The allegations concerning the stench emanating from the Black Bush Secondary School on the Corentyne were reported in the Stabroek News on Wednesday.
Bhajan, who said that she wanted to set the record straight, stated that immediately after news of the stench of floodwaters reached the Department of Education on February 22, last, a team from the Works Department was dispatched to the school by the Regional Chairman.
“The official Mr. B. Archer who headed the team found no leakage to the septic tank but observed flies and maggots under the thick mass of damp grass in the schoolyard. Regional Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, sent in an excavator to clear the drains to facilitate speedy drainage of the schoolyard,” she told Kaieteur News.
She added that the school was relocated to three alternative venues by the Regional Education Officer on the following school day February 24, 2011.
According to the official, fumigation activities by the Neighborhood Democratic Council (NDC) commenced on February 28, 2011 when the flood waters subsided. The situation was monitored on a daily basis by Regional and Education officials.
Bhajan said that on Wednesday, the PTA Chairman indicated to her on the school site that although it was the eighth day since school was relocated, the children should not return to school until full assurance was given by public health officers that the environment was safe.
The Regional Chairman held discussions on March 9, with the parents who expressed appreciation for interventions made by the Regional administration.
Bhajan added that additional arrangements were made for the washing of the school building and ploughing of the school-yard.
Bhajan told Kaieteur News that there is no existing fish pond kept by the school neither is there any incident of related illness of children as alleged by the said newspaper.
“No learner is denied instruction since classes are being held for all learners. With the approval of health officials who visited the school and took soil and water samples, the building is currently being prepared for re-occupation on Monday, March 14, 2011.”
