Players from Georgetown and its environs are set to pay tribute to former junior and senior National player Kevin Lawrence on March 26, when the Ravens Basketball Club hosts a one night extravaganza in honour of his passing at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The 28-year-old Lawrence died March 27, 2010 at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after experiencing complications following surgery he underwent the previous day.
Lawrence had sustained severe injuries to his back and neck after being involved in a car accident in Suriname and was a patient in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at the time of his passing.
In a releases issued, it stated that Lawrence was arguably one the best shooters in the game locally and his club, Ravens, thought that it would be only fitting to pay homage to the player who has been highly instrumental in their several successes during his tenure at the club.
Dyna’s Embroidery, American Airlines and Hits and Jams Television (HJTV) are the sponsors of the event that will see Ravens Third Division team taking on the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) Elite while the senior Ravens side will do battle against an All-Star combination.
Players from the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden are expected to be drafted into the mix with the Kevin Lawrence Memorial Trophy up for grabs along with cash incentives.
Club member and long time best friend of Lawrence, Syriah Clarke commented: “This will be an annual event, but next year we might make it a four team affair and then let it grow from there, but this is just the start.” The event will officially be launched on Monday March 21.
