Milton Payne, the 70-year-old squatter who on Friday severed the arm of an alleged intruder, has been released on station bail.
Payne, a farmer who has been occupying a government reserve at Vryman’s Erven/ Smythfield, for a very long time, allegedly used a cutlass to sever the left arm of Ray Anthony, called ‘Rambo’, 25, a drug addict of Angoy’s Avenue.
The addict was allegedly on the plot of land Payne occupied.
According to the police, Payne was released on station bail after the 72-hour detention time has elapsed.
Investigators are awaiting a statement from the victim who is still a patient in the Georgetown Public Hospital. A source close to the investigation stated that as soon as investigators get a statement from the victim, advice may have to be sought from the DPP. Then they can proceed with charges.
According to reports, around 09:30 hrs on March 4, Anthony who is a known character, was found on the farm which is covered with thick bushes. Payne, duly informed by his son that Anthony was on the land, armed himself and went in search of ‘Rambo’.
He found the object of his search hiding under some bushes armed with a Rambo Knife. The man was confronted and a scuffle reportedly ensued. Rambo was severely wounded on his left hand, which was almost severed at the wrist. He was also left unattended in the bushes on the Farm for a long while. The police eventually got word of the incident and visited the farm twice before they found the severely wounded man in the thick bushes. He was immediately rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital, where doctors immediately referred him to the Georgetown Public hospital where he remains warded.
Residents nearby said that they did not hear anything and suspected that the man was tied up so he could not make a sound before being injured. They stated that the addict was a regular visitor of the man and would pick coconuts for him.
Payne, a former Mirror newspaper vendor was featured in the Kaieteur News a few weeks ago as the person who was spraying dangerous chemicals on the farm on the Government reserve and causing nearby resident to fall ill.
Residents had reported the matter of squatting and spraying of the chemical to both Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha and Community Relations Officer of the Office of the President, Faizal Jaffarally.
They also reported to the police and the Mayor and Town Council on numerous occasions, but nothing was done.
