National Schools’ and Cross Country Champion, Doretta Wilson, could miss the National Youth and Junior Championships this weekend because of an apparent transportation issue that is likely to prevent the athlete from being considered for national selection.
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) had said last week that this weekend’s event will be the basis of selection on Guyana’s Junior CARIFTA Games team. As a result, it was expected to have the full participation of Guyana’s leading junior athletes.
However, Kaieteur Sport learnt yesterday that Wilson went back to her village, Achawuib, which is located in the Deep South of the Rupununi, following her return from the North American and Central America, Caribbean (NACAC) race in Trinidad last month.
“She (Wilson) has gone back to Achawuib and it’s unlikely that she’ll make it out in time for the national championships,” Chairman of the Hinterland Youth and Sport Development Foundation, Mark Rodrigues, told this newspaper via telephone last evening.
Wilson was apparently expected to settle in Lethem until this weekend’s trials before she thought about returning to Achawuib. Such a move would have made it easier for her to travel to the City for the national championships because of travel issues in the past.
Wilson travelled eight hours on a dirt-bike from Achawuib to Lethem then another one and half hour to Georgetown via air last month to compete at the AAG National Cross Country Race that acted as trials for NACAC event.
All stakeholders interested in the well-being of the athlete were trying to prevent a recurrence of such strenuous travel arrangements with the athlete being based in Lethem, which is more centralised and accessible to Georgetown.
The AAG plan was to have Wilson compete this weekend then she would have remained here to compete at next weekend’s Inter-Guiana Games trials.
However, those plans would have been in some jeopardy with the development that Wilson has gone to Achawuib.
Following her two outstanding performances last year when she defeated CARIFTA Games gold medallist, Jevina Straker, and her Junior Cross Country win, Wilson was selected among eight of Guyana’s elite distance on the NACAC Cross Country team.
Her unavailability for national selection is likely to affect the judgment of selectors, who will be looking to have Guyana’s best athletes on the national team. This newspaper has learnt that three athletes from Region Nine, minus Wilson, are certain to compete. Two of those athletes include, Beatrice David and Junior Stephens.
Kaieteur Sport could not ascertain the third athlete that will come from Region Nine up to press time last night. Interestingly, it was not Hezron Pedro, who represented Guyana at the NACAC Cross Country race as well. (Edison Jefford)
