– relatives upset over driver’s release
Relatives of 21-year-old Gilbert Anthony Wharton are in a state of mourning after he succumbed yesterday afternoon to injuries he sustained in an accident last Monday night.
Wharton of Six ‘A’ Laing Avenue, died around 18:30 hours in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital where he had remained comatose since the accident.
Although he had suffered severe head injuries and appeared brain dead throughout his stay in hospital, relatives were desperately hoping against all hope that he would have slowly recovered. However that was not to be.
On Monday night Wharton and a friend, Omesh, were riding separate bicycles along Thomas Lands when the accident occurred.
Omesh recalled that Wharton was riding behind him when a car that was proceeding in the opposite direction, overtook another vehicle and slammed into him.
As Wharton lay motionless on the road the driver of the car who happened to be a policeman, came out of his vehicle and felt his pulse before offering to take him to the hospital.
According to Omesh, Wharton appeared badly injured and he knew at that time that his friend was in danger of dying.
Wharton’s cousin, Natesha Richards, related to this newspaper that he suffered a fractured skull, a broken jaw, “his brains shift and his eye shift out of place and six teeth came out of his mouth.”
She said that although he was on life support, relatives were praying a lot for him to survive.
“They told us that he had water in the brain and the last thing they told us was that he was bleeding internally. Although we were expecting the worst, all we could have done was hope and pray,” Richards said.
“Even if he had come out of the coma we would have been able to care for him but death is hard to take. He did not deserve this; he was hardworking,” said Richards, adding that the young butcher had been supporting his two younger sisters ever since his mother died a few years ago.
“If he was a child who used to thief or give us problems you could understand but he was such a good child,” Richards cried.
Last night several relatives and friends gathered at the home of the dead man to console his grandmother who had cared for him and his sisters since their formative years.
The dead man’s relatives are dissatisfied with the way the police have been treating the matter especially with regards to the rank involved, who they claimed was released from close arrest on Tuesday night, although Wharton remained critical in the hospital.
“The police knew about Gilbert’s condition and yet they released him (the rank). You bet if it was somebody else, they would have detained them for the full 72 hours,” Richards told this newspaper.
