Dear Editor,
With reference to a letter (Kaieteur News, March 2, 2011), captioned, “Did the Tourism Sector invest its money right at 63 Beach?” The Ministry of Tourism would like to respond to some of the views expressed by Ms. Ebony Narpatty.
Firstly, I would like to bring it to Ms. Narpatty’s attention that those facilities, including the benabs, were built because of the public’s demand and the need for such facilities.
It is a demonstration of the Honorable Minister of Tourism and his Ministry’s commitment to the development of our tourism sector.
The fact of the matter is Ms. Ebony Narpatty is operating a rum shop on the beach, and sees the beach improvement with the addition of toilets, changing rooms and benabs as competition to her business and has even asked us to remove these facilities from close proximity of her property.
These facilities are free to the public and they do not have to purchase rum just to use the washroom.
People are free to bring food and beverages to the beach, and we expect them to keep the environment clean. We are urging Ms. Ebony not to litter the beach. All rum bottles and beer bottles should be placed in bins.
It is not our intention to compete with her liquor establishment but we have an obligation to improve the quality of service on this beautiful tourist site.
Why is it that only now we are hearing complaints about facilities which clearly provide comfort and relaxation for persons going to the beach and which attracts hundreds of visitors each week.
Those benabs are spacious enough to accommodate a big family and provide a place for them to relax and enjoy themselves with their loved ones.
And these basic facilities only add to making the beach an attractive tourist spot and do not disrupt the natural environment of the beach.
Beach goers are extremely satisfied with facilities.
How can one not see these facilities as a positive enhancement to the beach and serving any real purpose?
With regards to the littering, it is in the interest and responsibility of not only the Beach Committee, but everyone to keep the beach environment clean and keeping this natural attraction beautiful.
