Twelve-year old Malica Hercules has been waiting four long years for the chance to look like any normal girl her age, in keeping with her bubbly personality.
But just before she crosses that final hurdle to secure the funds for the craniofacial surgery, there is the question of a further US$4,270.
Malice is expected to undergo further surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Canada and already she and her mother, Corzetta, have raised US$10,000, which includes a donation of $1.5 from the Ministry of Health.
But time is running out as our little friend and her family were given up to March 18 to gather the remaining sum.
Desperation is setting in since the doctor who is to perform the surgery has already waived his personal fee. Should the surgery be put off this arrangement could become null and they will have to come up with the full cost of US$25,000 to have it done.
Malica was born with a unique facial disorder, which was partially corrected by surgery, first in 2006 in Canada.
The following year she underwent remedial treatment in Trinidad but she still requires additional surgery to fully correct the disorder.
The follow-up surgery is to be done by Dr. Christopher Forrest, Medical Director, Craniofacial Programme Head, Division of Plastic Surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children.
Malica and her mother are desperate for your help and should you be so inclined, there is an account at the Demerara Bank # 1159870, where your contributions could be made to help Malica overcome some of the stigma attached to her present condition.
