A major catastrophe was averted at the Georgetown Prisons yesterday when fire threatened the facility that houses close to a 1000 inmates.
Thanks to the swift response by the Guyana Fire Service, the small fire which was observed between a double wall of the northern dormitory was quickly put out.
The area where the fire was seen is not too far from where high profile prisoners are held.
But according to a senior prison official, there appears to be no sign of any unrest within the prison.
“The prisoners were all under control. The experts will determine whether it (fire) was deliberate or not,” the official told Kaieteur News.
The offshoot was that the entire facility was locked down. Shortly before 14:00 hours yesterday fire tenders were rushed to the prison after receiving a report of fire at the main penal facility.
According to a source, the fire was quickly detected thanks to smoke detectors located in strategic areas of the prison.
The source credited the quick reaction to yesterday’s incident by all involved to the Joint Services Drills which have been rehearsed several times in preparation for similar situations.
“We have been rehearsing these drills ever so often and I’m pleased with the way things worked out yesterday,” the official stated.
There have been attempts to set fire to the prison from within on a previous occasion but again swift action had averted a major disaster.
